Many Origins, One Home
Did you know there are more refugees today than ever before in the history of our world? 68.5 million people doing whatever it takes to make better lives for themselves, their families, seeking asylum with as little as the clothes on their backs and hope for the future. Many Origins, One home is a student run advocacy group promoting refugee and migrant rights for all groups of displaced people. We share stories in the news covering the refugee crisis. It is our job, now more than ever, to create a welcoming climate and a place for displaced people from all walks of life to call home. |
Record high displacement |
Record low asylum |
There are more refugees today than ever before. Last month the UNHCR released their most recent report. There are currently 68.5 million forcibly displaced people worldwide. 40 million of which are Internally Displaced People (IDPs), 25.4 million refugees, and 3.1 million asylum-seekers. 57% of refugees are escaping from the South Sudan, Afghanistan, and Syria.

Out of nearly 25 million refugees in the world, about 1 percent are considered for resettlement worldwide. The United States has offered refugee to those fleeing war and persecution in the past. However, the current administration has put a travel ban in place, suspending the refugee resettlement program for 120 days and reducing refugee arrivals by more than half.

Last year there were twenty million refugees and forty million people displaced within their own countries, as a result of violence—that’s sixty million people, in sum. One in every 122 of the global population is displaced by conflict."
